The City of Ekurhuleni is truly honoured and blessed to claim Oliver Reginald Kaizana Tambo, known for the better part of his life simply as OR, as one of its own. O R Tambo sacrificed life’s comforts so that today we can all enjoy relative peace, stability and tranquillity. We are proud of the fact that South Africa’s and Africa’s premier international airport, situated in our metro, is named after this great man who was hailed at his funeral as “a great giant who strode the earth like a colossus” by Nelson Mandela. And it is fitting that the O R Tambo Narrative Centre in Wattville, Ekurhuleni, together with the O R and Adelaide Tambo gravesite monument in Tamboville Cemetery, will be a place where all South Africans, Africans, and progressive people of the world will come to learn of the life and times of this great son of Africa, of his immense contribution to humanity, and in so doing celebrate his everlasting legacy.
